Chemical Peel

What is a Chemical Peel?

There are 3 main types of medical grade chemical peels – TCA, Glycolic and Jessner’s Peels. All have different concentrations. Determining which peel, and in which concentration depends on the condition of your skin type as well as the results you want to achieve.  The higher the concentration, the deeper the peel will go, and the longer the recovery time. Chemical peels work to smooth superficial wrinkles, correct pigment disparities, and improve the overall tone and vibrance of your complexion.

How Does It Work?

A chemical peel procedure takes approximately ten to fifteen minutes to complete. Your skin will first be cleansed, then the chemical peel applied.  No anesthesia is necessary during the procedure, though it is common to feel a stinging sensation during the treatment. Dr. Kaplan can prescribe a mild pain reliever to mitigate any pain or throbbing experienced after your chemical peel.

Does It Hurt?

It is common to feel a mild stinging, burning sensation during the treatment.

Is It Safe?

Medical grade peels must be administered by medical professionals that have the necessary  experience and expertise. The peels themselves are a safe, FDA approved, non-invasive cosmetic treatment that can greatly improve the appearance of the skin by eliminating the damaged outer layers.

What to Expect Following Procedure

You will feel a mild burning or stinging sensation immediately following the treatment. The recovery period for chemical peels depends on the type of peel and the concentration, but generally takes an average of about one to two weeks of recovery time. During recovery, you may experience skin redness and swelling in the treated areas. And while results vary depending on the depth of the peel, you generally will see your skin start to peel during or after the first week. You will notice the new skin and the improved texture, color and quality of your skin. Please keep in mind that it is vital to follow all patient aftercare instructions in order to reduce the risk of complications from chemical peels. Because your skin will be highly sensitive, it is crucial to stay out of the sun. Further, avoid using any skincare products unless the ingredients are approved by Dr. Kaplan.
